About this guide

This guide is intended to serve researchers in need of definitions, biographical or background information, online thesauri, etc.

  • Web resources are freely available from anywhere, by anyone.
  • Library databases may require the user be either on campus, or logged in.
  • Credo Reference
    Use for: FULL TEXT ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLES, MAPS, DEFINITIONS, IMAGES
    A fulltext online reference shelf. Credo Reference contains dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, thesauri, quotations, atlases, and general and subject specific encyclopedias on topics such as art, business, geography, history, language, law, literature, music, philosophy, psychology, religion, and technology.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library
    Find: ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLES
    Search subject specific reference books on topics including business, education, history/terrorism, medicine, law and government, and science.
  • Oxford English Dictionary
    Use for: HISTORY OF WORD USAGE
    Online counterpart to the 20-volume print edition. Traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery books.
  • Oxford Reference Online
    Use for: FULL TEXT ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLES and QUOTATIONS
    Resource for facts, figures, definitions, and translations. Find more than 50,000 scholarly articles from titles in the Oxford Companions series, plus all 20,000 quotations from the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.
